Reading for Enjoyment Leads to Success
If I could give you just one tip for becoming a successful student and a true scholar, it would be to read like crazy. You can learn almost any subject in this world by reading about it. You can eventually become a renowned expert, have a lot of fun, and reap many rewards along the way.
Benefits of Reading
- Knowledge of subject matter
- Improved ability to understand people who are educated or “well read”
- Reading and vocabulary skills improve naturally as you enjoy what you are reading
- Writing skills improve naturally the more you read well-written material
Then you haven’t read the right stuff. What are you interested in? There is probably no topic on earth that hasn’t been written about somewhere.
But I am a slow reader!
That will not limit you as much as you think. Reading is worth taking time for, and even if you are a slow reader, you can increase your reading speed if you keep it up. You learn to read by reading, and that holds true for rate as well as comprehension.
Remember These Two Rules
1. Read high-interest material. There is probably no topic on earth that hasn’t been written about somewhere. Read extensively about anything you are fascinated with—devour everything you can about your hobbies and interests. Read stories, articles, novels, journals, newspapers, magazines, cartoons, blogs. Join a book club, or form one among your friends.
2. Select reading materials that are slightly challenging—not difficult, but writing that contains at least some new vocabulary and ideas that really make you think.
These insights on reading have come from many years of research, particularly on the part of Dr. Stephen Krashen, a noted author, researcher, conference speaker, and professor of language acquisition. If you follow this advice, you will advance your ability to succeed in every kind of college course you may take.

I always wanted to be a good reader but i find it very difficult to concentrate when it comes to read or write something maybe what i need is to find the right book. Sometimes i start reading something and i won't finish reading it because i get bored in the middle of the book or even before that.
