There are more students entering community colleges unprepared and under-prepared for college-level work than ever before. Research performed in California illustrates that 70-85% of students entering community colleges enroll into basic skills courses in one or more area, Fulks, J., & Alancraig, M (2008). “The United States Department of Education has defined remedial education (basic skills) courses as reading, writing and mathematics courses for college students lacking those skills necessary to perform college-level work at the level required by the institution. ” Snowhite, (2000). These primary basic skills courses include but are not limited to: Math, English, Reading and ESL which are required coursework to receive an Associate Degree, transfer to a 4-year university or qualify to enter into other college level courses.
Helping students succeed through these courses and gain the proper skills to elevate their learning process is a difficult task, yet it’s essential in order for them to compete at a collegiate level. The students that cannot compete at a collegiate level are set on several stages and levels of probation at the college they attend. There are combinations of 3 stages of probation that apply to either or both academic and progress standings for students at Pasadena City College. he counseling department at Pasadena College is generally the area that addresses the needs of the probationary students. Since there are budgetary and time restrictions, this department cannot give the one-on-one attention that is required for these students to succeed in their college coursework. Due to the role the Learning Assistance Center (LAC) serves at the college, the dean of counseling approached the director to help create and develop an intervention program for the section of the student population that currently have probationary status. From this proposal, John Wood, the director of the Learning Assistance Center approached me with the idea and challenge of assisting him with this project which then led to the development of the CRSP intervention for dismissed probationary students.

1. Based on the Historical Context of CRSP what information did you take from this message?
What do you need in order to reach your educational goals?
What do you expect from the CRSP program, mentors and leaders to help you succeed?
Explain what you can do to become a successful college student.
1) The main message I took away is that I am not alone in my struggles. Seeing how 70-85% of students enroll basic skills courses, I find it pleasing to know that Pasadena City College is doing everything they can to help their struggling students.
2) One of the things I need in order to reach my educational goals is money to help pay for necessary supplies. Another thing I need is a good study plan. I never had to study in high school and am now unsure how to in a way that it will not be boring.
3) The main thing I expect from the CRSP program is a good kick in the butt and a reality check that I need to change my ways in order to stay in school. The mentors and leaders will hopefully help me figure out what to change and also help me stay on that path.
4) First of all, I need to update my Ed Plan to my new major. During the upcoming semester (and ones to follow) I need to keep up with my work, even if it isn't technically due until later. The more I put off, the harder it will be to complete it when it's due and I will start to really fall behind.

if you have shelter and food, you have enough to learn.
its not supposed to be fun. the purpose is to learn for the sake of learning and preparing for tomorrow. not saying you shouldnt have fun, but college's purpose is not to enable pleasure
you can do it!
1. What I got from the historical context of CRSP, Is that there are people out there that are willing to help on a personal level. I have been back in school for almost two years now, and most of the time i feel I get very little help. It will be nice to have a mentor that will give me some personal guidance.
2. Mostly what I need to reach my educational goals is financial. However, I could use some help getting involved in student activities. I also need to return to a counselor to update my student education plan.
3. What I expect from the CRSP program is pretty much the things I listed above. I could also use some help on choosing instructors for some of my courses. I found that after returning to school after several years, some professors an be more helpful than others.
4. To become a more successful student, I need to learn more efficient time management. Besides work, I have an 11 year old son who is with me half the time. I sometime find it difficult to find a proper time to study.

1. Based on the reading, I learned the high percentage of students who do not have the basic skill needed to enter succeed in college. #1) What I have learned from the context of CRSP is that many students enter college without being prepare. This not only holds them back but can hurt them academically. Based on the remidial classes they take. This group has been created to help students like myself to succeed in college and gain the proper skills that will be able to use in everyday life situations.
# As a student at PCC i need to gain more skills necessary to continue my education. For example tutoring in math since thats not my strongest subject. I also need more encouragement!
# From the CRSP program I expect help that will make me a better student. To keep me more focus on the prize (graduation).
# I can take the proper classes that best fit me as a student. Take all the help that is offered in school and outside of school.Ask questions when necessery!

Hey CRSPers please number all of your answers and sign off with your name.
It was my mistake to not number all of the questions.
Your answers and outlooks are looking great, keep up the good work, and stay motivated!
1. I took away that I'm not the only one going through this and as strange as it maybe, I found much comfort in knowing this because it's been a heavy load the past couple of years dealing on my own. I'm excited and grateful to be a part of this new program and deeply appreciate PCC taking the time to invest in students like me who are struggling.
2. In order to reach my academic goals, I need a revised and set plan as to when I will be leaving PCC, as well as motivation to push through and encouragement as to not feel less capable of learning the material and developing the skills(like REALLY studying) to do so. I also would like to explore coping skills for test-taking as well as just knowing how to stay calm when the material proves to be more difficult than usual. (I tend to have mild anxiety at times.)
3. I expect to be seen as someone capable and someone worth investing in. I expect that with the help of CRSP I will be more able to stay determined and focused on my goals. I would like to learn how to study at a collegiate level as well as learn to have the adult mentality to stay positive, strive, and really push through. I feel ready to make the commitment on my end, so I expect for CRSP to commit as well.
4. I think what I can do to become a more successful student is really commit to my education. I feel like my attention in the past has been scattered by being in too many places at once, and not managing my time well because of it. I've always put work or friends before school. I've never been in school 100%, but I'm ready to take that step and really focus on myself beginning with my education and academic goals. I want to be successful and I want to feel like I haven't wasted my time being a student all these years. I want to feel confident in my choice of pursuing education. But to really pursue it, I know I must first commit to education, and commit to wanting to be in school for myself, not others.

3. I expect just help! To better myself as a student get good tips learn the ways of becoming a great student.
4. Keep pushing!

Hi,
My Name is Dylan
(I received an email telling me to elaborate more on my answers and number them)

1. Based on the Historical Context of CRSP what information did you take from this message?
The message I took based on the histrical context of CRSP are mainly that my present status on academic probation is not only an issue that plagues me, but one that plagues many students throughout the United States. My thoughts are that not only is the CA school system lacking in areas and suffering from priority issues, but that the children are being diverted from the ultimate goal in most situations. Not to place the blame somewhere else of course. I feel that with the resources available CRSP looks like its doing a good thing at first glance.
2.What do you need in order to reach your educational goals?
In order to reach my educational goals I need a plan to be set in place. I need some guidelines and standards set in place for myself in order to succeed. I need a rigorous amount of self discipline, coupled with a much healthier lifestyle. My educational goals are not so easy attained.
3.What do you expect from the CRSP program, mentors and leaders to help you succeed?
I hope that the program and mentors will give me the tools and advice to succeed in college. I feel that the guidance offered will not only help me improve in school, but in life as well. I also need the reassurance that I am doing the right things the right way, and I feel as if the staff here will be able to help me with that.
4.Explain what you can do to become a successful college student.
I touched the subject a little in my above responses. I feel a much more disciplined lifestyle is in order. That along with much more sleep, good eating habits, and a time management table will help tremendously. I also need to prioritize and not procrastinate, which tends to be one of my main weaknesses. I feel that with a balanced structure there is know way to shake my foundation.
1.) The information I took from this message is that with the high number of people that enter community colleges in California and the rate that our economy is in right now, there are more people than some that need extra help in order to transfer to a university and get out of the community colleges. Because with the lack of funding, there may not be much to help these students and we need to help these students succeed faster in order for them to move on. Lastly, what I took from this information is that some students may not be at the collegiate level and just need more help to transfer quicker.
2.) what I need in order to reach my educational goals is to actually go and ask for help with math classes. I cannot keep from withdrawing classes and just make it through them. And what I need is to listen and ask for help.
3.) What I expect from the CRSP program, mentors and leaders to help me succeed is to not only help me make it through this program. But to be understanding and help me get out of pasadena city college faster because I am nearly done and this school and myself need me out already. And lastly, to be nice, patient, and help.
4.) what I can do to become a successful college student is to not waste time, like instead of watching television, I can read a couple of pages in the books, or make study cards things of that nature. I can get math tutoring and be serious about math. And to just focus more so that I can transfer already. Thank you.

1) The information i got from the Historical Context of CRSP was that i have been messing up, which has enabled me to be on probation. It also provided me with a statistic that i fall under, but didnt want to accept. With the information i've read, i think i have got a better understanding of my mistakes and past actions that didnt bother me until i had to take this program.
2) To reach my educational goals i need to be very aggressive and consistent with my college work. i also need to keep track of time and thought when it come to education. Most importantly i need to start on my major so i dont have to take uninteresting subjects.
3)I really dont expect anything from the CRSP program, mentors and leaders to help me succeed. Not in a disrespectful way, but somethings in life that you want to achieve automatically starts and ends with yourself. But everyone can use some sort of help one way or another and also at one point or another in their lives.
4)To become a successful college student i need to appreciate where i am today, and how i should use my time and energy for positive activities. i should stop playing around and get down to business. I need to get on top of my responsibilities and accomplish them as soon as possible.
